MCU Watchlist
The story-chronological Marvel watch order guide
What Is MCU Watchlist?
MCU Watchlist is a free, ad-supported tool for anyone watching — or rewatching — the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It organises all 130+ MCU films, Disney+ series, and Marvel-adjacent titles into a single story-chronological sequence, with importance ratings (Essential / Recommended / Optional) that help you decide how deep to go.
The site is built and maintained by a small independent team of Marvel fans. It has no affiliation with Marvel Studios, The Walt Disney Company, or any official MCU property. All film and series data is sourced from publicly available information and TMDB.
Why Story-Chronological Order?
The MCU was released over seventeen years across 33+ theatrical films and 20+ Disney+ series, but the in-universe timeline does not match the release order. Captain Marvel (2019) is set in 1995. Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) is set in the 1940s. Several Disney+ series take place between films released years apart. Watching in release order means missing the narrative connections that make the universe coherent.
Story-chronological order follows the in-universe timeline — starting with the earliest events and progressing forward. It's the order in which the MCU's events actually happened, which makes character arcs, callbacks, and foreshadowing land as intended. It's also the order this site recommends for first-time viewers who want to experience the full franchise as a single connected story.
What We Cover
MCU Watchlist covers the full Marvel Studios canonical catalogue plus contextually relevant Legacy titles:
- Marvel Studios films — the complete theatrical MCU from Iron Man (2008) through the current Multiverse Saga
- Disney+ Original series — every MCU-connected series including WandaVision, Loki, Hawkeye, Moon Knight, and more
- Netflix Marvel series — Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Defenders, and The Punisher
- Legacy titles — Fox X-Men films, the Blade trilogy, and Sony Spider-Man films with confirmed MCU connections
- One-shots and specials — Marvel One-Shots, holiday specials, and post-credits scene collections
Each title includes cast information sourced from TMDB, streaming availability (US), runtime, story-order position, and an editorial note explaining why the title matters and where it fits in the broader MCU arc.
The Watch Order Methodology
Story order is determined by the in-universe date of primary events, cross-referenced against official Marvel statements, the MCU timeline published on Disney+, and established fan research. Where the in-universe date is ambiguous — as it often is for Disney+ series that overlap with film release windows — we prioritise narrative coherence over strict chronology.
Importance ratings (Essential / Recommended / Optional) reflect how much each title contributes to the main MCU narrative arc. Essential titles are those whose events are directly referenced in subsequent films or series. Recommended titles add significant character depth. Optional titles expand the universe without affecting the primary storyline. These ratings are editorial judgements, not official classifications.
The Watchlist Tool
The MCU Watchlist tracker on the homepage lets you check off titles as you watch them. Progress is saved locally in your browser — no account required, no data sent to any server. The tracker works on any device and persists across browser sessions as long as you don't clear your browser storage.
The site also includes a Schedule Planner that estimates how long your remaining MCU marathon will take based on how many hours per day you intend to watch, and a streaming guide showing which titles are available on Disney+, Netflix, Max, Hulu, and other platforms.
Data Sources and Attribution
Movie and series data (cast, overview, runtime, trailers, poster and backdrop images) is provided by The Movie Database (TMDB). MCU Watchlist uses the TMDB API but is not endorsed or certified by TMDB.
News articles are sourced via publicly available RSS feeds from established entertainment publications. Streaming availability data reflects US availability and is updated periodically; regional availability may vary.
