Stephen Strange's origin is the MCU's most explicitly anti-heroic. He arrives as an arrogant neurosurgeon whose hand injury destroys his identity, and his path to the Mystic Arts is initially motivated entirely by self-interest — he wants to fix his hands, not save the world. The transformation from ego-driven surgeon to Sorcerer Supreme is the franchise's clearest Campbellian hero's journey, and Benedict Cumberbatch plays the residual arrogance as a running note throughout, never letting Strange fully settle into comfortable heroism.

Doctor Strange's most significant MCU moment happens in Avengers: Infinity War, when he reviews 14 million possible futures and finds exactly one in which the Avengers win. His subsequent decision to give Thanos the Time Stone — apparently surrendering — only makes sense in retrospect, after Endgame reveals he was engineering the one viable outcome all along. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness then uses the Darkhold's corruption to examine what happens when Strange's tendency to act unilaterally goes too far. His appearances in Spider-Man: No Way Home add a lighter register to the same fundamental question: when does protecting the universe require sacrificing the individual?
