Captain Marvel
"Higher. Further. Faster."
The story follows Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races. Set in the 1990s, Captain Marvel is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Carol Danvers becomes the most powerful hero in the MCU. Her 1990s origin explains why she's been off-world — and why she answers when called. Carol confirmed for Doomsday.
Why It Matters in the MCU
Carol Danvers' origin film arrived as the franchise's first female-led solo entry and its most self-consciously 1990s project. The non-linear structure — Carol piecing together her past alongside the audience — serves the character's arc: she is not rediscovering her powers but her identity. The Skrull twist inverts the genre's default alignment of alien-as-threat and human-as-hero, which is the film's most substantive creative move. It also retroactively places Nick Fury at the centre of a cosmic conspiracy from the very beginning of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Where It Fits in the MCU
Captain Marvel sits at position 6 of 133 in the MCU's story-chronological order, placing it within the Legacy: 1990s era. It is rated Essential — must-watch for following the main MCU narrative. Watching in story-chronological order provides the most coherent character development experience — individual arcs build naturally toward the franchise's major crossover events, with each film's post-credits scenes carrying forward into what follows.
