Hulk (2003)
"What if everything you were forced to keep inside was suddenly set free?"
Bruce Banner, a genetics researcher with a tragic past, suffers massive radiation exposure in his laboratory that causes him to transform into a raging green monster when he gets angry.
Ang Lee's Universal-produced Hulk, five years before Marvel Studios rebooted the character in The Incredible Hulk. Eric Bana's Bruce Banner is a separate continuity — the 2008 film starts over rather than continuing this one.
Outside the MCU A Universal Pictures production, made outside Marvel Studios, so it belongs to a separate continuity. It's listed here because it shares characters with the MCU — whether you watch it is up to you.
Why It Matters in the MCU
Ang Lee's Hulk is the most formally ambitious Marvel adaptation of its era and the least commercially rewarded — a psychodrama about inherited damage that happens to feature a green giant. Its split-screen comic-panel editing was a genuine attempt to translate the page rather than merely illustrate it, and the Nick Nolte material pushes the film toward Greek tragedy in a way no superhero film had risked. Audiences expecting a monster movie got a two-hour meditation on paternal cruelty. Marvel Studios rebooted the character five years later rather than continue it, which makes this the clearest example of the pre-MCU era's willingness to hand a franchise to an auteur and accept whatever came back.
Where It Fits in the MCU
Hulk (2003) sits at position 36 of 165 in the MCU's story-chronological order, placing it within the Legacy: 2000s era. It is rated Optional — can be skipped without losing the main thread. Watching in story-chronological order provides the most coherent character development experience — individual arcs build naturally toward the franchise's major crossover events, with each film's post-credits scenes carrying forward into what follows.
