The Defenders (Season 1)
"The devil of Hell's kitchen, the smart-ass detective, the hero of harlem & the kid with the glowing fist"
Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist join forces to take on common enemies as a sinister conspiracy threatens New York City.
Matt, Jessica, Luke and Danny team up against the Hand. Sets up Matt's presumed death that opens Daredevil S3.
Why It Matters in the MCU
The crossover series bringing Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist together is at its best in the first four episodes, when the team doesn't yet function as a unit and the character contrasts — Matt's faith, Jessica's cynicism, Luke's community anchor, Danny's unearned confidence — generate genuine friction. The Hand as the shared villain is the weakest element, recycled across all four solo series with diminishing returns. The eight-episode format is the correct length for what the series needs to do, though the Sigourney Weaver villain exit is a structural problem the show doesn't fully recover from.
Where It Fits in the MCU
The Defenders (Season 1) sits at position 48 of 133 in the MCU's story-chronological order, placing it within the Phase 3A — Street Level Heroes (2015–2016) era. It is rated Recommended — enriches the story but not strictly required. Watching in story-chronological order provides the most coherent character development experience — individual arcs build naturally toward the franchise's major crossover events, with each film's post-credits scenes carrying forward into what follows.
