X-Men '97 (Season 1)

"New episodes. New era."

Released March 20, 2024 5h ★ 8.7TMDB ○ Optional

The X-Men, a band of mutants who use their uncanny gifts to protect a world that hates and fears them, are challenged like never before, forced to face a dangerous and unexpected new future.

Watch note

A direct continuation of X-Men: The Animated Series (1992), picking up its continuity rather than the live-action films. Made by Marvel Studios Animation, but set in its own universe — nothing here affects the MCU timeline.

Why It Matters in the MCU

A revival that treats its 1992 predecessor as canon rather than nostalgia, picking up mid-story and trusting the audience to keep pace. What makes it work is tonal seriousness: it commits to the Genoshan massacre and its fallout with a weight the original series was never permitted, while keeping the character designs and theme music that made that show formative for a generation. It is the strongest argument that continuing an existing continuity can be more interesting than rebooting it, and its critical reception reset expectations for what Marvel Studios Animation could be.

Where It Fits in the MCU

X-Men '97 (Season 1) sits at position 24 of 165 in the MCU's story-chronological order, placing it within the Legacy: Alternate Universes era. It is rated Optional — can be skipped without losing the main thread. Watching in story-chronological order provides the most coherent character development experience — individual arcs build naturally toward the franchise's major crossover events, with each film's post-credits scenes carrying forward into what follows.
