The Black Panther is the protector of Wakanda, enhanced by heart-shaped herb and Vibranium technology. T'Challa's arc from revenge-driven king to wise leader ends with Wakanda Forever — and a torch passed to his sister Shuri.
The Black Panther is both a character and an institution: the warrior-king of Wakanda, protector of the most technologically advanced nation on Earth, defined by the weight of leadership and the gap between the ideal of Wakanda and its isolation from the world. Ryan Coogler's Black Panther (2018) uses that gap as its central tension: T'Challa inheriting a kingdom whose policy of concealment has caused exactly the kind of suffering it was designed to prevent. The film's politics are the sharpest in the franchise.
Chadwick Boseman's death in 2020 required the franchise to navigate grief publicly and onscreen. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022) is both a sequel and a memorial, giving Boseman's T'Challa a mourning period rather than a recasting, and transferring the Black Panther mantle to Shuri. Letitia Wright's performance reframes the role around a character who explicitly rejects everything T'Challa believed about forgiveness and peace — making the film's resolution genuinely earned rather than obligatory. Eyes of Wakanda (2024) expands the kingdom's history. Both Black Panther films work on their own terms and carry significant additional weight in sequence.
