The Phoenix storyline — the franchise's most ambitious narrative property — was compressed into a subplot rather than given the feature-length treatment it needed, and Jean Grey's arc suffers correspondingly. The mutant cure storyline is a more substantive metaphor than the main narrative but gets considerably less screen time. Its most lasting legacy may be that Days of Future Past needed to exist.
