Blade
"Against an army of Immortals, one warrior must draw first blood."
The Daywalker known as "Blade" - a half-vampire, half-mortal man - becomes the protector of humanity against an underground army of vampires.
Wesley Snipes' vampire hunter — the film that proved Marvel movies could work before the MCU existed. Snipes rumoured (unconfirmed) for a Doomsday or Secret Wars cameo.
Why It Matters in the MCU
Released in 1998 — four years before Spider-Man and six before the first X-Men — Blade is the film that demonstrated superhero adaptations could be commercially successful without the camp register that had defined the genre since Batman. Wesley Snipes' performance established a template for a different kind of superhero: one with no interest in quipping or relatability, whose competence is predicated on contained violence rather than charisma. Its influence on the MCU's tone is pervasive and rarely acknowledged — every Marvel film that commits to darkness without apology owes something to Norrington's direction.
Where It Fits in the MCU
Blade sits at position 7 of 133 in the MCU's story-chronological order, placing it within the Legacy: 1990s era. It is rated Optional — can be skipped without losing the main thread. Watching in story-chronological order provides the most coherent character development experience — individual arcs build naturally toward the franchise's major crossover events, with each film's post-credits scenes carrying forward into what follows.
