Deadpool 2
"Prepare for the Second Coming."
Wisecracking mercenary Deadpool battles the evil and powerful Cable and other bad guys to save a boy's life.
Vanessa is killed at the start. Cable arrives from the future. Deadpool forms X-Force (most die immediately). Sets up the found-family theme that carries into Deadpool & Wolverine.
Why It Matters in the MCU
The sequel doubles the ensemble and sharpens the self-awareness without losing the emotional directness of the original. The introduction of Cable brings a genuine foil — a character playing the genre completely straight while Deadpool dismantles it — and the tension between their approaches carries the film's dramatic weight. The X-Force recruitment sequence, and its immediate consequences, is one of the most efficient subversions of a superhero ensemble setup ever put on screen. It also proved the first film wasn't a novelty: the format had enough depth to sustain a sequel.
Where It Fits in the MCU
Deadpool 2 sits at position 66 of 133 in the MCU's story-chronological order, placing it within the Phase 3B — Civil War & Fallout (2016–2018) era. It is rated Recommended — enriches the story but not strictly required. Watching in story-chronological order provides the most coherent character development experience — individual arcs build naturally toward the franchise's major crossover events, with each film's post-credits scenes carrying forward into what follows.
