Deadpool
"Feel the love."
The origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who, after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.
Wade Wilson's origin as Deadpool. Deadpool & Wolverine (Doomsday-essential) is the direct payoff — you'll appreciate it far more having seen this.
Why It Matters in the MCU
Deadpool broke the superhero film's unspoken rule about tone and got away with it. Ryan Reynolds had been developing the character for nearly a decade after X-Men Origins effectively suppressed the concept, and the result of that persistence is a film that knows exactly what it is mocking while still managing to be genuinely funny rather than merely self-aware. The R rating forced every creative decision — humor, violence, and character work — to earn its place rather than defaulting to franchise-approved safety. Its box office performance permanently changed how studios approached adult-rated superhero projects.
Where It Fits in the MCU
Deadpool sits at position 65 of 133 in the MCU's story-chronological order, placing it within the Phase 3B — Civil War & Fallout (2016–2018) era. It is rated Recommended — enriches the story but not strictly required. Watching in story-chronological order provides the most coherent character development experience — individual arcs build naturally toward the franchise's major crossover events, with each film's post-credits scenes carrying forward into what follows.
