Why It Matters in the MCU
The only MCU film with an actor recasting at the franchise level — Edward Norton was replaced by Mark Ruffalo before The Avengers — The Incredible Hulk is also the most direct genre experiment in Phase 1: a monster movie structured more like Ang Lee's 2003 Hulk than a standard origin story. The production was contentious, with Norton substantially rewriting the script and the final cut reflecting a credited creative dispute. It introduced the Abomination and planted Harlem as a location that would matter to Luke Cage years later. This remains the MCU's most stranded entry — acknowledged as canon but disconnected from the franchise's visual and tonal continuity.
Where It Fits in the MCU
The Incredible Hulk sits at position 19 of 133 in the MCU's story-chronological order, placing it within the Phase 1 — The Avengers Initiative (2008–2012) era. It is rated Recommended — enriches the story but not strictly required. Watching in story-chronological order provides the most coherent character development experience — individual arcs build naturally toward the franchise's major crossover events, with each film's post-credits scenes carrying forward into what follows.
