Why It Matters in the MCU

Released a year after Sam Raimi's Spider-Man and clearly built to the same commercial template, Daredevil is the film that demonstrated the formula did not transfer automatically. Ben Affleck plays Matt Murdock closer to brooding vigilante than tortured Catholic, and the theatrical cut's studio-mandated pace strips out the legal procedural that gives the character his moral weight — the later director's cut restores roughly thirty minutes and is materially the better film. Its lasting significance is negative: the character's screen reputation stayed poor for over a decade until Netflix's version proved the problem had never been the source material.
