Why It Matters in the MCU

The first Marvel sequel had the difficult job of expanding the universe without a self-contained story to tell. It introduces Black Widow, establishes Rhodey in the War Machine suit, and plants the seeds for the Avengers through the Nick Fury subplot — but the split between Justin Hammer and Whiplash as antagonists dilutes both threats rather than compounding them. The film's most durable contribution is the Stark Expo as a setting and the concept of Stark's technology as a geopolitical liability as much as a personal gift.
