Tony Stark reveals he's Iron Man — the moment the MCU began. His Avengers Initiative conversation with Fury seeds everything that follows.

Why It Matters in the MCU

The film that started the MCU built its entire premise on a bet that a second-tier Marvel character could carry a franchise if the casting was right. Robert Downey Jr's Tony Stark defined the template for MCU protagonist charisma — quick-witted, technically brilliant, fundamentally self-interested, and capable of genuine change — and every hero introduction since has been measured against it. The cave sequence, where a man builds a weapon to escape captivity and decides instead to become something better, remains one of the tightest origin stories in modern cinema. Its final line — 'I am Iron Man' — set the tone for an entire cinematic universe.
