Waging his one-man war on the world of organized crime, ruthless vigilante-hero Frank Castle sets his sights on overeager mob boss Billy Russoti. After Russoti is left horribly disfigured by Castle, he sets out for vengeance under his new alias: Jigsaw. With the "Punisher Task Force" hot on his trail and the FBI unable to take Jigsaw in, Frank must stand up to the formidable army that Jigsaw has recruited before more of his evil deeds go unpunished.

Why It Matters in the MCU

The third distinct Punisher continuity in nineteen years, and the only one to commit fully to the character's violence as style rather than tragedy. Lexi Alexander directs it as an exploitation film with comic-book colour, and the results are genuinely unlike anything else in Marvel's screen history — closer to Italian crime cinema than to superhero filmmaking. It was a commercial disaster and has since acquired a real cult following, largely because it is the only version that never apologises for what the character is.

Watching in story-chronological order provides the most coherent character development experience — individual arcs build naturally toward the franchise's major crossover events, with each film's post-credits scenes carrying forward into what follows.
