Why It Matters in the MCU
Thomas Jane's Frank Castle is the most faithful screen reading of the character's core proposition — that revenge is not catharsis but a slow self-erasure — and the film is at its strongest when it simply sits with him in an empty apartment block. The revenge mechanics against John Travolta's crime boss are more baroque than brutal, which blunts the nihilism the comics run on. Jane's later short film, made without studio involvement, is widely considered the better Punisher text, and says something about how close this version came to working.
