Physicist Bruce Banner, transformed by gamma radiation into the Hulk, has spent years at war with himself. His journey towards integration — becoming Smart Hulk — and the consequences of wielding the Infinity Gauntlet define his arc.
Bruce Banner's MCU story is one of the franchise's most fragmented and, as a result, most underappreciated. The Incredible Hulk (2008) established his backstory but sits disconnected from the franchise's later visual continuity. The Avengers gave him his most memorable moment — the 'that's my secret' reveal — and Thor: Ragnarok reframed him as a cosmic figure trapped between man and monster. The resolution comes in Avengers: Endgame with Smart Hulk: Banner integrating both identities and accepting the limitations that come with it.
Banner's arc across the Infinity War films carries specific emotional weight: he's the Avenger whose power fails at the critical moment (Infinity War's opening fight with Thanos leaves Hulk refusing to emerge), and his later use of the Gauntlet costs him the full use of his arm. She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (2022) expands the Hulk mythology through his cousin Jennifer Walters, adding a legal comedy register that addresses themes of power, gender, and institutional accountability. Banner's story rewards patience — it pays off slowly across many films.
