Avengers: Age of Ultron
"A new age has come."
When Tony Stark tries to jumpstart a dormant peacekeeping program, things go awry and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes are put to the ultimate test as the fate of the planet hangs in the balance. As the villainous Ultron emerges, it is up to The Avengers to stop him from enacting his terrible plans, and soon uneasy alliances and unexpected action pave the way for an epic and unique global adventure.
Tony creates Ultron from the Mind Stone — an act of hubris that creates Vision and triggers the Sokovia Accords. The Avengers fracture begins here.
Why It Matters in the MCU
Ultron had the unenviable task of following the original Avengers film, and it shows — the production was troubled, the villain underwritten relative to the concept, and the mid-film vision sequences were clearly reassembled in post. What survives is the Scarlet Witch and Vision introduction, Hawkeye's quiet domestic subplot that humanises the ensemble's most overlooked member, and the Sokovia sequence as an action set-piece with consequences the franchise kept returning to. It remains the textbook case of what happens when a sequel prioritises setup for future films over its own internal story.
Where It Fits in the MCU
Avengers: Age of Ultron sits at position 39 of 133 in the MCU's story-chronological order, placing it within the Phase 3A — Street Level Heroes (2015–2016) era. It is rated Essential — must-watch for following the main MCU narrative. Watching in story-chronological order provides the most coherent character development experience — individual arcs build naturally toward the franchise's major crossover events, with each film's post-credits scenes carrying forward into what follows.
