Wanda Maximoff · Wanda

Sokovian twin given powers by the Mind Stone, Wanda Maximoff is one of the most powerful beings in the MCU. Grief over Vision's death manifests as reality-warping chaos in WandaVision — a breakdown with multiversal consequences.

Wanda Maximoff is the MCU's most powerful and most tragic figure. Orphaned in Sokovia, experimented on by HYDRA, she began the franchise as an antagonist and ended Phase 4 as its most compelling villain — a progression driven entirely by grief. The Mind Stone gave her powers; Vision's death in Infinity War and the trauma of the Westview incident in WandaVision gave her a reason to use them destructively. Her arc is the franchise's most honest engagement with how loss can transform a person into something unrecognisable.

WandaVision is essential viewing before Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness — without it, Wanda's turn to villainy in that film reads as arbitrary. The series documents her psychological unravelling with unusual care, framing her reality-warping breakdown through the lens of American sitcom history. Multiverse of Madness then shows the endpoint of that unravelling: a woman so consumed by the idea of her children that she's willing to destroy entire universes to reach them. Agatha All Along (2024) explores the aftermath of the Darkhold's corruption through Agatha Harkness, extending the magical world Wanda's story built.
