22 Essential Movies to Watch Before Spider-Man: Brand New Day

Brand New Day is the last MCU film before Avengers: Doomsday, and it leans on more setup than any solo Spider-Man movie before it. You do not need all 158 MCU titles to follow it. You need 22 movies, about 48.5 hours, watched in the right order. This is that list, pulled straight from the same connection data that powers the full watch-order guide, trimmed to films only so you can actually finish it before showtime.

Why these 22 and not the full 23-title list

Brand New Day's complete essential watchlist is 23 titles, because it also takes in the TV that a movies-only list leaves out, and it places the credit scenes worth stopping for along the way. This list is deliberately just the movies, the fastest honest path to understanding what Peter has lost, why Frank Castle is back, and what Yelena is really doing in his story. If you want the TV as well — Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Hawkeye, She-Hulk and more all feed into the film — the full guide has the complete order.

How to actually watch these before the movie

The list below is in story order, not release order. Story order is what avoids spoiling later films with earlier ones. If 48.5 hours sounds like a lot with a release date bearing down on you, the free planner on this site will split it across your actual week and tell you whether you will finish in time.

Two familiar faces you might not expect

Two returning characters explain why this list looks the way it does. Jon Bernthal is back as Frank Castle / the Punisher, but his entire build-up is TV, not film: Daredevil, two Punisher seasons, and Born Again. None of that is on this movies-only list; it's in the full guide instead, which is exactly why that guide exists alongside this one. Florence Pugh's Yelena Belova is the opposite case. She IS here, first in Black Widow and then leading the team in Thunderbolts*. Neither is required viewing — Yelena is in two scenes of Brand New Day, not at the centre of it — but they are where you meet her, so both sit just below the essential tier rather than on it. Neither character is re-introduced from scratch on screen; both assume you already know where they came from.

Budgeting the 48.5 hours

At 48.5 hours across 22 films, that's about 25 evenings at a typical two hours a night, or call it a month at a relaxed pace, or a long weekend if you'd rather binge it in one go. If that is more than you have before showtime, don't guess at what to cut. The planner ranks these by story position and tells you exactly which ones you would still be mid-way through on your target date.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I really need to watch all 22 movies before Spider-Man: Brand New Day?
Watch-necessity is graded, not all-or-nothing. These 22 are the ones the film's own story runs through, so skipping them means missing setup the movie assumes you already have. Everything else that connects, from TV seasons to credit scenes, is in the full guide, graded by how much you'd actually miss.
What order should I watch them in?
Story order, which is what is listed below, not release order. It is the order that sets up each film's reveals without spoiling them from a later one watched too early.
Is Spider-Man: Brand New Day connected to Avengers: Doomsday?
Yes. It's the last MCU film to release before Avengers: Doomsday. It doesn't require Doomsday to make sense (nothing could, since Doomsday isn't out yet), but it closes out several threads, including Frank Castle's and Yelena's, that Doomsday picks up from.
Do I need to watch the Daredevil or Punisher Netflix shows too?
Not for this list. Those are TV seasons, not movies, and they're part of the 23-title complete guide rather than this movies-only cut. If you want Frank Castle's full arc rather than just the films he's in here, the complete guide has the shows in story order alongside everything else.
I'm really short on time. What's the minimum?
The three-film fast track above. Every source agrees on the same one. No Way Home is the load-bearing film in it: that's where the "world forgot Peter exists" premise Brand New Day opens on actually comes from. It's the fast track, not the complete picture, though. The other 19 films on this list are what the story runs through to get everyone else (the Avengers, the Punisher, Yelena) into position.
